Was Dicaprio on board?

We had these two little tough guys and they got up on the bow of the boat, and you know the scene from Titanic? One of them was on the outside and the other big bloke who’s ‘rough as guts’ and HUGE is going ‘Hold me Jack, hold me..’ He was Kate Winslet and the other was Dicaprio! It was great to see these two little tough guys doing this whole scene.

"Everyone was excited the first day. It was all giggles and laughter with each taking a turn at steering, but with big south westerlies coming up behind us we were a bit nervous because we knew the weather was going to get a bit big” says Steve Emmett, returning from a recent Northern Campaign.

“In the end, we had nearly 4m swells, which was huge. Most of us had experienced those conditions, and certainly people like Gordon had, being in eight Hobarts.”

The group had been out all night and were coming into Bundaberg when Gordo hooked a 1.1 metre Spanish Mackerel - then another the next day. (This was after they’d lost two rigs out the back of the boat, and then Ian lost a third on their way up the coast from Sydney).

“It was our first relaxed, sunny day ‘off’ after the high seas and stormy weather. We got footage of them wrestling the fish onto the deck. Then we found out Harry Atkinson was a fishmonger when he was a teenager, so he gutted the fish and they had it on the barbecue on the Monday night (with one of the locals and a friend of Gordon’s).

The best part is the kids - they are just fabulous. You see a lot of movement. It’s pretty clear if they're unhappy because they'll cry, but when they're happy, they’re rocking and animated. Some of them were just over the moon, and we had dolphins coming right up to us and dancing around the bow.

And what was really hilarious was that we had these two little tough guys and they got up on the bow of the boat, and you know the scene from Titanic? One of them was on the outside and the other big bloke who’s ‘rough as guts’ and HUGE is going ‘Hold me Jack, hold me..’ He was Kate Winslet and the other was Dicaprio! It was great to see these two little tough guys doing this whole scene.

The response from the carers was extraordinary, and one teacher said they had never seen the kids so happy. They talked about what the kids had really enjoyed; the feeling of the wind, the boat and the movement - the vibration of the motor through the deck. For them, that is so powerful. And of course they loved sailing the boat, pulling on the ropes and the winches, and steering - we had some real talent onboard that day. Great fun and very rewarding."
